Friday 18th September

English

This week in English we have continued to read poems from the anthology Out and About. We read a poem called Mudlarks. We explored all the words we can use to describe mud and then wrote our own mud poems.

We remembered to:

• say our sentences out loud
• use a capital letter
• use a full stop
• segment our spellings.

Maths

In Maths this week we have started a new topic about comparisons.

We have started by comparing height, length and weight.

We compared objects and repeated the stem sentences:

The pencil is shorter than the book.

The ball is lighter than the stone.

We used the vocabulary

• shorter than /longer than
• taller than /shorter than
• heavier than /lighter than

We have started our new topic, Creation and Covenant. We read the story of the Creation in The Book of Genesis. We created a whole class display that included all the things that God created. We looked at art work depicting God’s creation and said how it made us feel closer to God.

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

Friday 11th September

This week in English we read the poem Out and About by Shirley Hughes. We thought about the describing words that the poet used. We talked about the things we do when we are out and about in different seasons and wrote sentences about what we like to do best.

In Maths this week we have been counting both forwards and backwards within 100. We read Spinderella by Julia Donaldson and counted legs of flies and spiders. We also solved problems such as:

If there were 2 spiders, how many legs would there be?

We drew pictures so that we could count all the legs to help us to solve this problem.

This week we celebrated our return to school with Mass at St Helen's Junior School.

We also talked about how much Jesus loves us and wrote a whole class prayer for the prayer tree at the entrance to our school.
