Friday 19th December

This week in English and Maths we have read Little Robin Read Breast by Jan Fearnley.

We have applied our learnt phonics to spell the days of the week.

We sequenced them in Maths and rewrote the story in English, remembering to say our sentences out loud and include capital letters and full stops.

The children all did an amazing job at segmenting their spellings before writing them down. The only spelling that we helped them with was Wednesday!

In RE this week we thought about how Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus in the community. We designed posters welcoming the community to our celebrations.

Our class mangers are now full of our acts of kindness and love ready for the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day.

Friday 12th December

This week in English we have thought about all that Grace would have seen at the market. We wrote letters home remembering to:

· Say our sentences out loud

· Segment our spellings

· Include a capital letter

· Include a full stop

· Use an ‘and’ to extend our sentence

 

In Maths we have continued to look at 3D shapes, naming them and exploring their properties.

We have partitioned numbers in a systematic way.

In RE this week we ordered all the events of the Christmas story, starting with the Annunciation and finishing with the angels visiting the shepherds. We then re wrote these events in our own words.

Friday 5th December

This week in English we have used role play to re tell traditional stories remembering to include the repeated phrases such as

“Grandma what big eyes  you have!”

“Grandma what big ears you have!”

“Grandma what big teeth you have!”

 

In Maths we have continued to look at 3D shapes, naming them and exploring their properties.

We have looked at the following 3D shapes: cube, cuboid, cylinder, sphere, cone, triangular prism, square based pyramid.

We have counted faces, vertices and edges.

 

In RE this week listened to  The Visit of the Shepherds (Luke 2:8-20).

We talked about how angels bring good news and the good news was ‘Jesus is born.’

Friday 28th November 2025                                                                  

This week we acted out the key events in the story, Grace and family. We collected words about how she felt, what she saw and heard and what she did. We then wrote accounts of these events.

We remembered to say our sentences out loud so our thoughts were really clear before we wrote them down.

We included a capital letter and a full stop and segmented our spellings.

 

In Maths we have been investigating 3D shapes.

We have named them and described their properties.

We have named spheres, cubes, cuboids, cones, cylinders and pyramids.

We have repeated the following sentences when describing them.

In R.E. we have written our advent promises as we are preparing for the beginning of Advent next week.

Friday 21st November

This week in English we have created story maps showing the main events of the story in our power of reading book, Grace’s Family.

We then chose our favourite event and wrote a short narrative. We included what happened, how Grace felt, what she saw and what she did.

We remembered to say our sentences out loud so our thoughts were really clear before we wrote them down.

 

In Maths we have continued to investigate polygons (2D shapes with 3 or more straight sides).

We have named triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons and hexagons.

We have repeated the following sentences when describing them.

It has _____vertices.

We have also learnt that a circle is not a polygon because it has only 1 curved side.

 

In R.E. we have continued to talk about features of Jewish religious practice.

We learnt about The Kippah that Jewish men wear as a sign of respect.

Friday 14th November

This week in English we have been thinking about how Grace felt as she went to meet her family that live in Africa. We have thought about our families and how they are all different. We wrote sentences describing our families remembering to use capital letters and full stops. We also remembered to say our sentences out loud so our thoughts were really clear before we wrote them down.

In Maths we have been investigating 2D shape. We have copied and created our own repeating patterns, explored tetronimoes (shapes that can be made using 4 squares) and pentominoes (shapes that can be made using 5 squares).

We have also investigated the shapes that make up a tangram and used these to make our own pictures.

In RE this week we have been learning about Judaism as it is Inter Faith week.

We have learnt all about the Holy book called The Torah and also wrote questions to ask Jewish people about so that we can find out more about their religion.

Friday 7th November

This week in English we have started our new book Grace and Family by Mary Hoffman. We talked about Grace’s family and wrote questions to ask Grace to find out more.

We remembered to use

• a capital letter
• a question word
• a question mark

In Maths we have been using the language one more than and one less than. We have looked at consecutive numbers and applied this vocabulary.

4 is one more than 3

3 is one less than 4

We have also learnt how to draw a vertical bar model to illustrate this.

In RE this week we have continued to read from Luke’s gospel. We listened to the story of The Visitation when Mary went to visit Elizabeth to tell her how God had chosen her to be the mother of his son. We looked at works of art and wondered about how both Mary and Elizabeth would have been feeling.

We also learn the words to the Hail Mary.

Friday 24th October

This week in English we have thought about which poem we liked the best out of all the poems that we have read and learnt this term from Out and About by Shirley Hughes.

We listened to A little bit of food by Joseph Coelho and wrote our own version about fruit.

In Maths this week we have matched numbers to words and to sets. We have tried to subitise when saying how many is in a set rather than counting every object and have also verbalised our thinking too.

There are 7 cubes. I can see 5 and 2 and that makes 7.

There are 8 apples. I can see 4 and 4.

There are 8 apples. I can see 2,4,6,8.

In R.E. this week we have started our new topic, Prophecy and Promise. We named the 4 gospels in the New Testament and read the story of The Annunciation from Luke’s gospel. We reflected on what Mary said to Angel Gabriel when he appeared to her.

Friday 17th October

This week in Science we have been looking at the season of Autumn. In English we have thought about all that we have learnt and used our ideas to write Autumn poems.

We remembered to; Say our sentences out loud

Include a capital letter and a full stop

Segment when spelling.

In Maths we have been looking at the vocabulary associated with time;

Before, after, next, days of the week and months of the year.

We have made sure we know the days of the week in order and answered problems about them.

What is the day before Friday?

How many days are there in the weekend etc.

Linked to our Science topic about seasonal change we have also looked at the months of the year, ordered them correctly and created a bar chart representing our birthdays.

We have continued to count forwards and backwards within 100.

In RE this week we reflected on how we can be stewards of God’s creation. We made placards to help spread this message and held a ‘small world’ peaceful protest.

Friday 3rd October

This week in English we enjoyed performing poems to an audience (our next door class) that we invited with invitations last week. We read a poem about fire and collected ideas about how fire looks, sounds and smells. We then wrote our own fire poems.

In Maths we have been working on recognising whole objects and objects that are not whole. We then looked at groups of objects that were whole  and groups of objects where something was missing so was only a part. We then started to split a group of cubes into different parts.

Our maths vocabulary this week is

We have continued to count forwards and backwards within 100.

In R.E. this week we have understood how praying draws us nearer to God. We learnt the Our Father and added our own actions and then wrote our own prayers of praise, thanks, forgiveness and asking for help.

On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Friday 26th September

English

This week in English we have continued to read poems from the anthology Out and About. We explored the rhythm of the poem Spring Greens and worked as a class to learn and perform it with expression and volume. We wrote a simple invitation to ask the class next door to come to our performance.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been comparing groups of objects using the language fewer than and more than.

The boy has more balloons than the girl.

We have introduced the children to the inequality signs

RE

We have understood that Catholics believe that God shows his love for us through creation. We wrote sentences about how we can see and feel God’s love and created collages of our favourite creations.

Friday 19th September

English

In English this week we read Wind by Shirley Hughes. 

We thought about all the different words we could think of to describe wind, created wind dances in response to the sound of wind and then wrote our own wind poems. We remembered to say our sentences out loud and segment our spellings.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been comparing objects using the language

shorter than, taller than, longer than, heavier than, lighter than and equal to. We have continued to count forwards and backwards within 100. 

RE

We listened to the Nicene Creed and learnt the first 4 lines. We understand that this is a prayer that Catholics say together to remind them of the amazing world that God created as a gift for us. 

Friday 12th September

English

This week in English we have read the poem Out and About by Shirley Hughes. We thought about the describing words that the poet has used. We talked about the things we do when we are out and about in different seasons and wrote sentences about what we like to do best.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been counting both forwards and backwards within 100. We read Spinderella by Julia Donaldson and counted legs of flies and spiders. We also solved problems such as:

If there were 2 spiders, how many legs would there be?

We drew pictures so that we could count all the legs to help us to solve this problem.

RE

We have started our new topic, Creation and Covenant. We read the story of the Creation in The Book of Genesis. We created a whole class display that included all the things that God created. We looked at art work depicting God’s creation and said how it made us feel closer to God.
