Year 2 Weekly Updates on Learning 2021-2022

Friday 8th July

This week in English we have been acting in role as the Egg Box Dragon and imagining what he found and how he managed to find it.

We loved letting our lights shine during the Mission week and we enjoyed painting our class cross and praying for our friends.

Sports Day was wonderful! We loved being in our house teams and cheering our friends on.

Friday 1st July

This week in English we have been finding out about the country Greenland. We have used websites, power points and atlases to collect information. We have created fact files and posters and have written about the similarities and differences in comparison with the U.K.

This week in Maths we have been using positional language to carry out instructions and describe routes. We have been using words such as in front of, behind, forwards backwards, quarter turn, half turn, three quarter turn, left , right, clockwise and anti clockwise.

This week in R.E. we have started our new RE topic Treasures. We have talked about what we treasure and thought about The World being God’s treasure that he gave to us. We enjoyed listening and responding to the story of the creation.

Friday 24th June

This week in English we have written descriptions of the Egg Box Dragon. We have also had fun re enacting scenes from the story to show the mischief that it has been getting up to and wrote speech bubbles to show what the people thought of this behaviour.

This week in Maths we have been measuring using standard measures.

We have drawn accurate lines using a cm ruler, remembering to always start at 0, thought about things that are longer or shorter than 1m and solved word problems that involve length. The word problems have also helped us to revisit the 4 operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

This week in R.E. we have celebrated the end of our Rules topic. We reflected on all that we have learnt, chose our favourite hymn and piece of scripture and made friendship bracelets to show our friendship with God.

Friday 17th June

This week in English we have started our new book The Egg Box Dragon by Richard Adams. We have designed our own dragons (thank you for all the cardboard box donations) based on the description in the text. We then wrote a set of instructions to tell other people how they could make an egg box dragon too. We have only read 3 pages of the book so far and so we have also tried to predict what we think is going to happen next.

This week in Maths we have named and described the properties of 3D shapes.

We have used the mathematical terms vertices, edges and faces.

We have used the following stem sentences to describe each shape:

My shape is a CUBE.

It has 8 vertices.

It has 6 faces.

It has 12 edges.

We had fun on Friday being teachers and videoing our own lessons teaching others all we had learned.

This week in R.E. we have learnt about the sacrament of Reconciliation. Father Martin very kindly came and spoke to us about it. We understand that this is a time when we can ask for God’s forgiveness and make up for the things we have done wrong by being kind and saying a prayer.

Friday 10th June 2022

In English we have been writing a story about Paddington visiting the Queen. We thought about what adventure he could go on next.

In Maths we were looking at unit fractions of numbers and shapes.

In RE, we were reflecting on when we have made the wrong choices and what we can say or do to ask for forgiveness.

Friday 20th May

This week in maths we have been dividing by sharing.

12÷2=

12 shared equally between 2 groups

Share 12 into 2 equal groups.

We have also continued to discuss the relationship between multiplication and division

We know that 6 X 2 = 12

So if we share 12 into 2 equal groups there will be 6 in each group.

In English this week we have continued to look at poetry from Julia Donaldson’s anthology of children’s poetry. We have expressed preferences as to poems we may like or dislike and given reasons why.

In R.E. this week we have been looking at Hinduism. Some of our children have really helped this topic come alive by sharing their experiences with us. We have learnt how Hindus pray with all their senses. We had great fun creating our own Puja trays.

Friday 13th May

This week in Maths we have been dividing by grouping.

We have answered word problems like:

There are 12 eggs that are divided equally into groups of 2.

We have used our 2 times table to help us solve this by counting in 2s until we get to 12.

Then we have recorded the division equation.

12÷2 = 6.

In R.E. this week we have thought about how we can spread the word about The Holy Spirit. We celebrated all that we have learnt in our Spread the Word topic, sang hymns about the Holy Spirit and made flags to share with our friends and families.

In English we have been recapping on nouns, proper nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs.

We have continued to think about poems from the anthology of poetry by Julia Donaldson.

Friday 6th May

This week in Maths we have been thinking about the relationship between doubling and halving.

We have explored this inverse relationship in the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

We also read The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson and created a tie for the giant that was double the size that we would need.

In R.E. this week we have thought about how the disciples felt before The Holy Spirit came and how they were filled with happiness once this promised friend had arrived.

We read the St. Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians 4: 13-14,18 and created a dance to reflect our feelings.

In English we have been looking at Poems to Perform by Julia Donaldson.

We thought about the rhythm in poetry and wrote our poems.

Friday 29th April

Well done everyone who has been using The White Rose Maths app this week for homework. It’s been great for us to hear via both the e mail and from the children in class how much you’ve all been enjoying it. It will continue to support their learning again this week if they have a spare 5 minutes.

This week in maths we have been thinking about the relationship between doubling and the 2 times table. If one of the factors is 2 then we can use our double facts to find the product.

E.G. 7 X 2 = One factor is 2 so the product is Double 7 which is 14

We have also used arrays to represent multiplication.

In R.E. this week we have read and then described The Ascension Luke 24 :48-52.

We found out about Jesus’ promise of The Holy Spirit who leads us and guides us.

In English we have been looking at the characteristics of non fiction writing. We have thought about titles, headings, diagrams, pictures, informative sentences and did you know questions. We created a piece of information text about The Blue Whale.

Friday 22nd April

Welcome back Year 2. We hope you all had a super Easter break and that you are all feeling refreshed and ready for your final term in the infant school. There are lots of exciting things happening this summer and we are looking forward to a great term.

This week in English, we have been revising and practising using the endings ing, ly and ily to words. We have also been writing them in sentences and remembering to add adjectives and adverbs to our sentences too.

This week in Maths we have continued to explore the 5 and 10 times tables. We have also investigated what happens to the product if one of the factors is zero.

In R.E, we have started our new topic Spread the Word. We will be answering the question “Why should we spread Good News?”. We will be looking at relevant scripture and considering how Pentecost strengthens Christians to share the news that Jesus has risen.

In Science we began our new topic of Living things and their habitats. We went around the school looking and photographing objects on the iPads that are in different stages of the process and recorded them in our books.

Friday 1st April

This week in English we have been looking at using apostrophes for contractions. We spotted them in our books, practised writing them correctly and also using them in sentences.

We also wrote the story of Good Friday and Easter Sunday after we had watched the assemblies that the whole school has been performing throughout the week.

This week in Maths we have been counting in 5s and 10s. We explored the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and used them to solve problems.

We have learnt the important words factor and product

factor X factor = product

6 X 2 = 12

The first factor shows how many groups.

The second factor shows how many in each group.

The product is how many altogether.

In ICT, we all had a go at using the facts that we found out about last week on Invertebrates to create basic PowerPoint presentations.

In R.E. we completed our opportunities topic by continuing our studies and focussing on Easter week. We completed our Easter cards by choosing a piece of scripture. We shall be bringing them home this week to spread the wonderful Easter message.

All of the children this week took part in an Easter assembly working alongside a class from Year One. We were very proud of the way that all of them participated by joining in and saying their words clearly in both hymns and words. Well done Year 2.

Friday 25th March

This week in English we have been looking at homophones; these are words that sound the same but are spelt differently. For example: to, too and two. We matched the homophones, wrote them and spotted them in our reading books – have a look for them at home too.

When hearing your child read at home please remember that it is really important to ask questions and ensure that your child is understanding the text and the actions of the characters.

In ICT, we have been learning how to gather facts and now we are going to start to learn how to create a PowerPoint.

Maths

We had lots of fun on Wednesday working out how many feet were in Mr Gumpy’s boat. We used a range of methods to record our findings including;

We have continued to practise counting in 2s and reciting our 2 times table.

We have been learning about the stories of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. We have also been practising our assemblies. If your child is a narrator, please make sure they know their words and are saying them in a loud, clear voice.

Friday 18th March

In R.E. we continued our Opportunities topic by considering how we can be more like Jesus during Lent. We described what happened on Palm Sunday by looking at different artist’s work and creating our own image.

This week in Maths we have been representing multiplication as repeated addition.

We would say, “There are 6 groups of 3.”

We could record this as repeated addition 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 =

We could record this as a multiplication equation 6 x 3 =

This week in Science it has been Science Week and the topic across the school has been Growth. We have looked at the growth of ourselves, animals, and plant. We have grown plants, recorded instructions on the iPads, learnt about Gentoo penguins and also considered who has helped us to grow in our lives.

In English, we have been writing fact files about penguins as well as writing instructions for making vegetable soup.

Friday 11th March

In R.E. we started our Opportunities topic by considering how we can become closer to God during Lent. We described what happened on Ash Wednesday.

Next week is Science Week and the topic is Growth. Why don't you encourage your child to have a think about what that means - growth of animals, brains, people, and plants.

In PSHE this week we have been considering road safety and have been talking about how to keep safe when we are near roads. It would be worth discussing these with your child when you are out and about.

In English we have been continuing to look at the ‘Snail and the Whale’. We have written a newspaper article describing what happened when the whale was beached.

In Maths we have continued to use Time Detective Clues to tell the time.

· Look at the long minute hand ...is it on the past or to side of the clock?

· How many minutes?

· Look at the short hour hand ... which number has it gone past/to?

We have established that there are 5 minute intervals between each number.

If the long minute hand is on the past side we count how many units of 5 it has travelled past the 12.

If the long minute hand is on the to side we count how many units of 5 it has to go to get to the 12.

We are not telling the time digitally yet.

So we would only say

Friday 4th March

Year two have had another really busy week. We have completed our last Fairtrade activity of the fortnight by looking at cocoa farmers and the environment and climates in which they work on The Ivory Coast.

In R.E. we completed our thanksgiving topic by considering how we can be thankful and how we are grateful for God too. We drew pictures of ourselves and wrote a list of what we are thankful for. We will be bringing these home to share with our families.

In English we have been looking at the ‘Snail and the Whale’. We have been going on adventures to visit some of the places that the snail may have gone to with the whale. We wrote a travel diary entry for each of the places. We have been practicing applying the suffix rules ness, ment, less, ful and er.

This week in Maths we have continued to practise both adding two 2 digit numbers and subtracting a 2 digit number from a 2 digit number. We have remembered to partition and apply our number bonds within 10. We have used number lines and written equations to show our working out.

We have also recapped on telling the time to o’clock, half past and quarter past and have learnt quarter to as well.

Ask the following questions to become a time detective;

Is the long minute hand on the 'past' or 'to' side of the clock?

If it is on the 12=o clock

3 = quarter past

6 = half past

9 = quarter to

Which number has the short hour hand gone past or which number is it going to?

Put the clues together and you should have the correct time.

Friday 25th February

In English we have been looking at our new book the ‘Snail and the Whale’. We have been imagining what it would have been like to have been the snail wanting to go on an adventure. We have also been looking at how the other snails may have felt. We created a conscience alley to persuade the snail and made up our own song using the sounds we knew from the book.

In Maths we have been subtracting 2 digit numbers from 2 digit numbers.

We looked at the following problems;

I had 45 biscuits.

I sold 20 and dropped 3.

How many were left?

There were 45 children in the swimming pool.

23 of them got out to get changed.

How many were left?

We thought about what was the same about them and what was different.

We noticed that they were both the same but in the first problem the 23 had been partitioned into 20 and 3.

We then worked the problem out remembering to partition the number we were taking away, taking away the multiple of 10 and then taking away the ones.

Partition 23=20+3

Take away the multiple of ten 45-20=25

Take away the ones 25-3=22

The children drew their own number lines and checked their working out on a 100 square.

Here are some problems you could have a go with using the same method.

There were 45 apples on the tree. The wind blew 14 of them off. How many were left?

I had 78p. I spent 24p on a bar of chocolate. How much money did I have left?

I had a piece of string that was 89cm long. I chopped off 33cm. How long was the piece that I had left?

In R.E, we looked at the words of the Eucharistic prayer and also considered how we recognise and understand the words of the Holy Communion. We acted out the Holy Communion and drew pictures too.

In Science, we have been looking at exercise and how it helps to keep us fit and healthy. We took photos of ourselves before and after exercising and considered the effect it had on our bodies.

We also started the whole school work on Fairtrade and our homework this week is related to it.

Friday 11th February

In English we have been reading our Power of Reading book, ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’. We have been acting out scenes from the book and created a story map. We then chose different sections of the book and rewrote it in our own words.

In Maths we have been revising the names and properties of 2D shapes. We have described them using the key words vertices and sides.

This is a pentagon.

It has 5 sides.

It has 5 vertices.

We then worked in groups and videoed our own shape presentations.

We also continued to practise our addition skills by ordering from a menu and adding up what we needed to pay. During half term you could try to add up prices in the supermarket, in a sweet shop or if you are lucky in a café or restaurant or when you role play at home.

This week the children have participated in an internet safety activity every afternoon as part of our Safer Internet week. They have learnt about not sharing information and when it is safe to do so. We have discussed and written kind messages, imagining that we were taking part in online gaming too.

The children have also thoroughly enjoyed the Break the Rules Day. It was great fun and they all looked so colourful.

In Science this week we have started to look at the importance of exercise and sport in our lives. We have been thinking about what we do at home to keep fit and the sports that we participate in during school hours too.

In R.E we have considered the four parts of the Mass and looked at the importance of The Holy, Holy, Holy.

Friday 4th February

In English we have been reading our Power of Reading book, ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’. We have been writing in role as the Princess to imagine what her journey up the glass mountain would have been like. We also wrote sentences about things that are most precious to us and thought about things that couldn’t be sold for gold or money.

In Maths we have been using all that we have learnt about addition and subtraction to reason about missing number problems.

E.G. [ ] + 10 = 22

We have been responding with answers such as:

We know that the answer is 12 because when you add a multiple of 10 to a number the tens change but the ones stay the same.
It must be 12 because 22 is the answer and 32 is too big.

This week in RE we started our new topic of Thanksgiving. We thought about what it means to be grateful. We also started to look at the Eucharist and how it began with The Last Supper. We studied Da Vinci’s famous painting.

It has been Children’s Mental Health Week in school. We started the week by our teachers randomly giving us Well-being Buddies for the week who we have worked alongside and, on a daily basis, we have been for a walk around the school grounds with them too. We also started the week with a yoga lesson with a yoga teacher called Hayley. She was great.

Thank you for all the food packets that you provided for last week’s homework. This week our homework will follow our theme of mental well-being.

Friday 28th January

In English we have been reading our Power of Reading book, ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’. We have been writing in role as the Princess and using words to describe her. We have been creating a story map and describing the Bear’s castle. We also predicted what we think will happen in the story.
In R.E, we created a poster about The Bible or The Gospels which you will see soon as we are bringing it home to spread the word. We also did a quiz about special books and tried to beat our teachers. We won !

In Science, we made videos about how to look after a pet. First we watched a video about Mrs McCarthy’s dog and then wrote lists about what we would need to do.

This week in Maths we have been solving word problems that involve addition

I have 15 blue flowers and 14 green flowers. How many flowers do I have altogether?

We circle they key numbers and the vocabulary (altogether) that explains that the operation is addition.

Friday 21st January

In English we have been learning suffix rules for adding s or es. We know that if the root words ends in ch, sh, x, o or ss we must add es. We have been reading our Power of Reading book, ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’. We have been pretending to be the princess or the king and writing in role as that character. We also created our own crowns and tried to persuade each other why our crown would be perfect for the princess.

This week in Maths we have been adding multiples of 10 to a 2 digit number.

We have followed 3 steps to do this;

Partition

Add the tens (using known facts within 10)

Recombine the tens and ones.

E.G. 27+40=

Partition 27 = 20+7

Add (the tens) 20+40=60

I know that 2+4=6 so I know that 20+40=60

Recombine (the tens and ones) 60+7=67

We can then check that we are right by adding on the tens by jumping down on our 100 square.

In R.E this week we have considered the importance of The Gospels to the parish family and also looked at the story of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist. We re-enacted this story by making our own puppets.

In Art, we have been using pencils, charcoals and pastels to draw lines and shade whilst looking at the work of Leonardo da Vinci too. We are continuing this idea this week by asking you to look at a tree and try to describe it in words and draw it using just a pencil.

Friday 14th January

In English we have been learning suffix rules for adding –ing. We have been dropping the ‘e’ before adding –ing and doubling the consonant when the root word is one syllable, there is a short vowel sound in the middle of the word and if it ends in a single consonant. For example run- running, jog- jogging, hop- hopping.

In Maths we have been adding and subtracting 10 to/from a 2 digit number.

We have worked out the following

When you add 10

· The ones stay the same

· The tens change

· You can double check on your hundred square

We have used this to solve addition and subtraction word problems and when we were increasing prices in shops that we set up.

In R.E we read some favourite Bible stories and then drew a comic strip of one of them so we considered the importance of the stories in the Bible – the most special book of all.

This week we continue our topic about healthy living and life processes by looking at the life cycle of a chicken. We had an afternoon of science creating a life cycle picture. We drew the inside of an egg by looking at a real egg that we cracked open on a plate. We then followed a set of instructions to make a paper chick and finally, followed a video to draw a chicken freehand.

Friday 7th January

Welcome back year 2.

What a super start and already Year 2 are back to working hard.

In English and RE this week we have been looking at the story of the Epiphany when the Three Wise Men came to visit Jesus in the stable at Bethlehem. We listened to the story, watched it, and then wrote about it in our books. Well done to the children, they remembered the story and managed to recall lots of the writing rules from last term too.

In Maths we have re visited the makes 10 strategy for subtraction.

We started our new Science topic about life, living processes and healthy living. They all really enjoyed being science detectives and guessing which teacher was which when they looked at photos from when they were little. We started to discuss the life cycle of human beings and how we change.

Thursday 16th December

This week in RE we have been writing about how Mary and Joseph prepared for the birth of Jesus, how they felt when they had to travel to Bethlehem and what happened when they got there.

In Maths we have continued to add and subtract single digit numbers from 2 digit numbers and we also solved the mystery of the disappearing reindeer bells!

We have finished our History Topic by finding out about the important jobs that many women did in the war and learnt about the bravery of Edith Cavell.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas singing today and would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas.

Friday 10th December

This week in RE we have listened to and thought about The Annunciation and The Visitation. We read Mary’s Song and thought about how Mary would have felt. We also painted a watercolour picture to depict The Annunciation.

This week in Maths we have been using the makes ten strategy to help us solve addition and subtraction.

In English we have written an adventure story about Traction Man.

We have followed instructions to explain how to make a Christmas Card and used our best handwriting to write a Christmas message to our families.

Friday 3rd December

This week in English we have been writing a diary entry in the first person. We pretended we were Traction Man and described his adventures. We have also been learning about writing verbs in the past tense where the root word does not change. For example, walk - walked, jump - jumped.

This week in Maths we have been using known facts to 10 to help us solve addition and subtraction.

Friday 26th November

This week we have started our new R.E topic of preparing. We have been talking about this time of advent when we prepare for Jesus' birth at Christmas. We have written our advent promises, made an advent wreath for our reflection areas and thought how we prepare for the holidays.

In Art we have continued our project of printing by creating Christmas tiles and making wrapping paper. We have crossed over two subjects by thinking about the properties of fabrics that we wear and tied it in with our reading book, Traction Man, who wears lots of different outfits in the story.

This week in Maths we have been using known facts within 10 to help us solve addition and subtraction.

We have used repeated stem sentences e.g

If I know that 3+4=7

I know that 13+4 =17

I also know that 23+4=27 etc.

If I know that 9-6=3

I know that 19-6=13

I also know that 29-6=23 etc.

In English we have carried on studying Traction Man by Minni Grey. This week we wrote verb phrases and thought of words that would describe Traction man’s character and appearance. We ended the week by writing a character description. The children are working really hard at improving the content and look of their writing and we are all really pleased with their hard work and effort.

Friday 19th November

In English we have been learning about Traction Man. We have been predicting what we think is going to happen in the book, thought about a voiceover and learned about Proper Nouns. Our homework this week will be linked to proper nouns. Remember, a proper noun is the name of a person, place or a specific thing. Eg. Miss O’Sullivan, London, Brentwood Cathedral.

This week in Maths we have been adding and subtracting single digits from a 2 digit number.

We have been using known facts within 10 to do this.

If we know that 3+4=7 then we will also know that 13+4=17, 23+4=27 etc

If we know that 7-3=4 then we will also know that 17-3=14, 27-3=24 etc

This week in school, we have been considering both Inter faith week and Anti bullying week. We have discussed respect for others, studied the Jewish ceremony of Shabbat and really focussed on saying one kind word to each other. The week has been full of compliments!

In Science we have carried out an experiment to find the best waterproof material by trying to keep a teddy bear dry.

In Art and Design we have combined lots of skills that we have been learning about and practising this term. We have designed a weaving frame using fabrics that we have printed with a repeating pattern. We evaluated our work when we finished.

Friday 12th November

In English we have been thinking about lots of different bug books. We persuaded the Bad tempered Ladybird to be good tempered, created our own bug pattern poem and retold the Very Hungry Caterpillar story by including our favourite food.

In R. E we completed our Signs and Symbols topic. We have really enjoyed talking about our own baptisms and the Rites of Baptism especially over the past few weeks.

What a fantastic week we have had. Maths week has ended up being so much more than just maths work. We have learnt about caterpillar life cycles in science, bad tempers and how to balance them in PSHE, and then we have practised patterns by printing in art. That is all alongside all of the mathematics work.

On Thursday we did, of course, think carefully about Remembrance Day. Each class in the school stopped at 11 am for 2 minutes silence. Year 2 also started their new history topic about World War One.

Friday 5th November

This week the whole school have been looking at British Values as part of our cultural calendar. We have really enjoyed learning all 5 of the values. We have played games to think about rules and we role played a story to think about democracy. We learnt about tolerance, respect and individual liberty too in our art and PSHE lessons.

Our homework this week is all about our rules at home.

This week in English we have been learning about Superheroes! We looked at what made a good superhero and created our own based on certain criteria. We used our top trumps cards to write a character description of a superhero. We also decided on what a good comic strip was and what we liked about them.

This week in Maths we have been taking away a single digit number from a teen number using the ‘makes ten’ strategy.

We know that we take 5 away from 15 to make 10.

8 can be split into 5+3

So 15-5=10

10-3=7

We are teaching the children to use calculation strategies rather than just counting on.

Although this seems a rather long process it is a skill that will really help them when working with larger numbers and more complex maths problems.

Friday 15th October

In English we have been writing our own poetry. We have creating a class seasons poem and have created our own silly poem. We have been thinking about verbs and adjectives to describe the leaves.

This week in Maths we have been adding 2 single digit numbers using the ‘makes ten’ strategy.

We know that 8 needs 2 more to make 10.

5 can be split into 2+3

So 8+2=10

10+3 =13

We are teaching the children to use calculation strategies rather than just counting on.

Although this seems a rather long process it is a skill that will really help them when working with larger numbers and more challenging maths problems.

We have noticed that some children have forgotten their number bonds to 10 so they are finding this method a bit hard. We are practising quick fire bonds to 10 at school but extra practise at home would be really beneficial.

In RE we have continued to look at the rites of Baptism and the importance of the symbols reflecting Baptism.

In Geography we have been looking at man made and natural features. We created maps of Brentwood and really enjoyed looking at the features in our own town.

Well done Class 7 you spoke in clear and expressive voices in your assembly about Beginnings and we are really proud of your hard work and performance.

Friday 8th October

Well done this week to Class 8 for your assembly on St Francis you used your big clear voices and we are proud of your first performance in front of your families for a long time.

On Monday, the children in St Francis’ house looked so bright in their yellow clothes.

In English we have been recalling facts about foxes. We have also been recording sentences with nouns, verbs and adjectives. Our homework this week links to our English learning. How many nouns can you find in your house?

In R.E we have started our new topic of Signs and Symbols. Father Gary visited Class 7 to discuss the symbols of Baptism.

We have also really enjoyed the start of Black History Month by beginning to look at the life of Martin Luther King.

This week in maths we have been looking at number lines.

We looked at our class number line which goes up to 100 and rulers that go up to 30.

We then predicted where numbers were on a 0-20 number line that only had 0 and 20 marked on it.

For example 10 is going to be in the middle because it is half way between 0 and 20.

9 is going to be just before 10 because 9 is 1 less than 10.

We then looked at empty number lines to 100.

We marked on the units of ten and then reasoned about where other numbers should be placed.

We then had great fun making a life size number line and placing ourselves in the correct places.

We remembered to use the key vocabulary: in between, more than less than, multiples of ten.

REMEMBER the widest part of the sign faces the biggest number.

In English this week we have been sharing facts about hedgehogs. We have worked with a partner to record the facts and we have looked at what makes a good fact file. We have also recapped the au, aw, ir, er and ur digraphs. The teachers have been giving out white handwriting house points for children who have shown clear letter formation when writing. Keep up the super work Year 2!

This week in R.E we have been completing our current topic of beginnings. We have been reflecting on the new beginning that God offers us everyday. We have listened to some lovely music and considered all that God has created.

It was wonderful this week that Class 9 were able to hold their assembly in the hall with their families there too. Next week it will be Class 8's turn.

In Science we have been looking at clothes and fabric and considering what fabricas are made from . The homework this week will be about the sources of textiles.

Friday 24th September

In English this week we have continued to read The Hodgeheg by Dick King Smith. We imagined how the lollipop lady would have felt when she saw the hedgehogs trying to cross the road. We retold the ‘First Crossing’ using adjectives, interesting sentence starters and Kung Fu Punctuation.

This week in Maths we have been partitioning into 10s and 1s and using this to create an addition equation.

We have also continued to use the repetitive sentences to say what we have,

Using the number 17

My whole is 17.

One part is 10.

One part is 7.

Together I have 17.

We know that we need to add both the parts to make the whole so…

10+7=17

We can also say

7+10=17

17= 10+7

17=7+10

This week in RE we have been looking at psalms and recording our reactions to them by drawing and using the iPads. We went out into the peaceful garden to look at God’s creation of nature. We took photographs using the I pads and talked about everything we could see.

In PE this week we have been able to get onto the field to practise running and ball skills and today we are going to join our tag rugby coach to learn even more ball and games skills.

Friday 17th September

In English this week we have continued to read The Hedgehog by Dick King Smith.

We thought about Max the Hedgehogs personality, what he looked like, his likes and dislikes and what other people knew about him. We then wrote a character description remembering to include capital letters, full stops, adjectives and interesting sentence starters.

This week in Maths we have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones.

We have used the stem sentences:

My whole is 17.

One part is 10.

One part is 7.

Together I have 17.

Repeating these sentences for each number that we partition has really helped the children focus on the process that they are completing.

This week in RE we have continued to read and consider beginnings . We have listened to Psalm 139 and practised responding to it. We then wrote a beginning prayer as a class and on our own.

In science, we continued looking at materials by comparing plastic, metal and wooden spoons. We decided which was the best type of spoon by thinking, looking and testing carefully.

In ICT we began looking at and reviewing photographs. We are going to learn to take and edit them in the next few weeks using the iPads. Look out for this week's homework about photographs.

Friday 10th September

Maths

This week we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. The children have particularly enjoyed doing this as body counting. We have also recapped on the names of 3D shapes (cube, cuboid, cylinder, sphere, cone, pyramid) , values of coins and telling the time to o clock and half past.

English

This week we have started reading ‘The Hodgeheg’ by Dick King Smith. We have enjoyed writing a setting description about the park and imagined what it would have been like to be a hedgehog trying to cross a busy road. We reminded ourselves to use our Kung Fu Punctuation in all of our writing.

This week we began to look at the story of the creation in the Bible. We have talked and written about our beginnings at the start of our day and how we feel when we have to do something new.

In Science we began our topic on Materials. We sorted out lots of objects into groups e.g. metal and wood. The children worked well in small groups using scientific vocabulary and sorting carefully.

We all read the book The Colour Monster to discuss a range of emotions and how they make us feel.

P.E lessons will be on Friday afternoon for all year 2 classes. Weather permitting, it will also be on: Class 7 - Monday and Thursday Class 8 - Tuesday and Wednesday Class 9 - Monday and Wednesday.

All earrings will need to be removed before children enter school, hair tied back and please ensure that P.E kits are always in school.

Homework and spellings will be handed out on Friday and should be returned on the following Thursday. A letter has been sent home with your child's homework this week. Bug Club and Mathletics log ins will be in your child's reading diaries.

Please ensure that all clothing is clearly labelled.

Monday 6th September

Welcome back Year 2 . You came into school beautifully this morning and showed us you are ready to be in Year 2. We are all really looking forward to the hard work and fun ahead of us this year.

This week, we will be starting our new book The Hodgeheg by Dick King Smith. He has written lots of books, have a look and see if you recognise any of them by doing an internet search with your parents. The teachers will hear you all read this week. You will receive a new guided reading book and find out your reading day. We will continue to send you home with three supplementary books each week. On Thursday you will be given your first homework of the year and spellings too.

In Maths, we will be revising number orders, basic addition and subtraction. We will start to practise counting in twos and fives. Everyday we will be revising our mathematical skills using songs, mental and written methods.

We will start our science topic of materials and we will begin our PE lessons too, so parents please make sure that all P. E kits are in school.
