Year 1 Classes 4, 5 and 6 - 2019-2020

Friday 20th March

 

English- We have been writing dinosaur facts using our knowledge of dinosaurs through books and images.

 

Maths- We have been making different amounts up to 20p with money

 

Dinosaur Day- Year 1 LOVED our dinosaur day! We made dinosaur silhouettes, creating a dino stomp dance routine and measured the length of dinosaurs. Did you know that a Brachiosaurus is nearly as long as our playground?!

Friday 13th March

In English we have been planning and writing our own dinosaur adventures.

In Maths we have been solving subtraction word problems.

In Come and See we have started our new topic of Change and the children have been thinking about how they have changed since they were babies.

Thank you to all adults who were able to attend Class 4's Assembly this week.

 

We very much enjoyed the visit by a Fire Safety Officer who taught us about being safe and also the history of the Fire Service.

Friday 6th March

 

English- We have been learning about the author Julia Donaldson and have enjoyed writing adjectives to describe the mean, terrifying and disgusting T-Rexes from Tyrannosaurus Drip.

 

Come and See- Thank you to all the adults and children who came to watch Class 5’s assembly about Meals.

 

Maths- We have been thinking about solving word problems involving addition

Friday 28th February

 

In English we have been trying to use the correct punctuation in our sentence writing. We also wrote a Winter Poem.

 

In Maths we have been measuring objects using cubes. We have also compared the length and height of different objects.

 

 In Come and See we are learning about Lent as a preparation for Easter and we wrote our Lent Promises.

 

 

Friday 14th February 

 

In English we have been writing diary entries. We planned and wrote one that described what we had done . We then planned and wrote a diary entry as if we were Samuel Pepys. Why don't you ask us what we wrote as Samuel Pepys?

 

In Maths we have been learning the names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We have enjoyed exploring the properties of different shapes including how many sides a 2D shape has and whether these sides are straight or curved and how many corners the shape has too.

When looking at 3D shapes we have explored the number of faces, edges and vertices each shape has. We have looked at and described a cube, cuboid, cylinder, sphere, pyramid and cone. Can the children find any 2D or 3D shapes at home and describe their properties?

 

In Come and See we have been learning all about the Last Supper.  We learnt that people celebrate this meal when they gather together at Mass. 

 

 

 

 

Friday 7th February

In English we have been using adjectives in lots of different ways to describe London.

 

In Maths we have been halving shapes, objects and amounts. We had the challenge question ‘Can all numbers be halved?’ We now know that only even numbers can be. Why don't you ask me what happens if you halve an odd number?

 

In our Come and See lessons we started our new topic of special meals. Have you ever had a special meal? Who was with you? What did you do?  

Thank you to all the grown ups who came to watch Class 6’s assembly. The children loved sharing their work with you.

 

Friday 31st January

In English we have been planning and writing a story about a trip to London with Paddington Bear.

 

In Maths we have been adding and subtracting using different resources.

 

In our Come and See lessons we have been thinking about all the special people in our lives and what makes them special.

 

Friday 23rd January

In English we have talked about London landmarks using adjectives.

 

In Maths we have learnt about repeated addition and started to explore 'groups of'.

 

In Come and See we have talked about and acted out the story of The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple.

 

Friday 17th January

In English we have been finding out about London in 1666 and how the Great Fire of London started.

 

In Maths we have been ordering days of the week and events that happen in a day.

 

In Come and See we have talked about the special people we would see in the Church and what they do to help us.

 

Friday 10th January

In English we have been writing sentences about Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We talked about interesting places to visit, capital cities and Patron Saints of each country.

 

In Phonics we have been recapping all the sounds we have been taught this year. Please can all parents check to see they have a sound mat at home to help children recognise Phase 3 and Phase 5  sounds. If you do not have a sound mat please ask your class teacher for one.

 

In Maths we have been looking at o'clock and half past times on an analogue clock. We have been reading the time and have made the time on a mini clock.

 

In Come and See we have started our new topic of Special People. We have thought about special people in our lives at school and at home.
