Nursery Weekly Updates on Learning 2026 - 2027
Friday 16th October
In Literacy this week we have been learning Nursery rhymes with a focus on memorising the words as well as singing to the pitch of another person. Some of the rhymes we have learnt include: ‘Mary Mary Quite Contrary’ and ‘A Sailor Went to Sea’ with accompanying actions.
In Maths have been learning about positional language. We have read ‘Duck in a Truck’ by Jez Alborough and ‘Cat Up, Cat Down’ by Catherine Hnatov. We have acted out parts of the books using the vocabulary; in, out, on, under, over, in front and behind.
In RE we have spoken about how God invited is to join his family which is called the Church. We join this family through Baptism. The children acted out a Baptism using props and water and discussed their own Baptism pictures noting what they knew or saw.
Friday 9th October
In Literacy this week we have been looking at our book “Hello Friend!”. We read the book, discussing which way it should be held and how the words read match the pictures. We acted out key verbs from the book. The children were also shown pictures from the book and said their own sentences based on the pictures aloud.
In Maths have been learning about shape, space and measure. We have read the books, ‘Big and Small’ by Elizabeth Bennett and ‘Whatever Next!’ by Jilly Murphy. We have been comparing the size of objects using words like bigger and smaller as well as using shapes to make different things like rockets!
In RE we reread the Creation Story. We spoke about how God gives us our family as a special gift and discussed how we showed love to our own families.

In Literacy this week we have been looking at our book “Hello Friend!” We read the book and shared how we can say hello to our friends when we join them at an activity or when we come into school in the morning. We also have acted out the verbs in the book and practised using actions to tell a story.
In Maths started to explore shape. We learnt what a circle, square, rectangle and triangle look like as well as making patterns with them. The children were also encouraged to paint the shapes.
In RE we read the story “God’s Very Good Idea” and spoke about how we have differences but God made us all so that means that we are all special.
