Geography Challenge

Friday 12th March 2021

For the next few weeks I would like you all to become weather investigators.

Can you keep a diary of what the weather is like each day ? You can keep it throughout the Easter holidays too. Maybe you could draw a picture for each day, like we do in school, or you may want to write down what the weather is like.

Think about recording if it’s sunny / cold/ windy  / has there been any rain? Etc

Perhaps you could even record the temperature by using a temperature app or website  - ask a grown up first.

Then become a weather forecaster and send me a video saying what you think the weather will be like when we come back to school. You can watch this to give you some ideas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo8lbeVVb4M

Send your work to year2@st-helens-inf.essex.sch.uk

I look forward to seeing your work. You will receive 5 house points.

Friday 26th February 2021

To start we are going to find out what weather is and how it can be different. Use these websites to find out all about weather and climate,

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwv2wnb/articles/z7dkhbk

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/geography-ks1--ks2-climate/zjdthbk

Think about these questions;

Do some types of weather make life tricky for us? Why?

Are some types of weather more fun? Why?

Which type of weather do you like? Why?

Choose a type of weather and draw a picture of it. Send it to Miss Ellis for 5 house points and a place on the Golden Face! I’m looking forward to seeing your work J

History Challenge

Friday 29th January 2021

For the last two weeks the history challenge is about holidays.

I would like to know all about one of your favourite holidays. It might have been a holiday in a different country, it might have been a holiday in the UK or it could be a holiday where you stayed at home and did something different.

Then I would like you to find out about one of your grown up's favourite holidays when they were small.

Here are some questions to get you started:

Where did you go? What did you do?  What did you see? Who went with you? What was the weather like? What was the food like? How far did you have to travel? Why was it your favourite holiday?

Think about what is the same and what is different.

Write, draw or send a video to tell me what you have find out.

Send your work to Miss Ellis at year2@st-helens-inf.essex.sch.uk and you will receive 5 house points and be put onto the Golden Face!

Friday 22nd January 2021

This week I’d like you to think about birthdays and how they have changed over time.

First think about your own birthday.

What did you do for your favourite birthday celebration? Where did you go? Who celebrated with you? What presents did you get?

Now ask a grown up to tell you about their favourite birthday when they were small.  What did they do? Where did they go? Who celebrated with them? What presents did they get?

Think about what is the same and what is different between your celebrations and your grown- ups.

Write, draw or send a video to tell me what you have find out.

Send your work to Miss Ellis at year2@st-helens-inf.essex.sch.uk

All entries will receive 5 house points and be put onto the Golden Face.

Friday 15th January 2021

This challenge is a 2 week activity.

Ask your mum, dad, grandparent or grown ups to tell you what toys they liked to play with when they were children.

Try to get as much detail as you can.  See if you can find the toy on the internet.

Here are some questions to help;

What was it called?

What did it do?

How did it work?

Was it a game, a toy you could play ‘make believe’ with or was it something different?

What was it made of?

Why did you like it?

Can you remember what year it was when you played with your toy?

Now try and draw a picture of your grown- ups favourite toy and write its name.

Next think of your favourite toy and draw that.

Finally think what is the same or what is different about the toys. Write or send a video telling me what you have found out.

Send your work to Miss Ellis at year2@st-helens-inf.essex.sch.uk

Our next stop on our fact finding trip for Santa is to Europe. Have a look at these websites  to find out some information. You could also look in books or ask you someone from home what they know.

Santa would love to see your drawings so let’s draw an area or a place in Europe you would like to visit. Some ideas are the beach in Spain, the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the mountains in the Alps.

Welcome Geographers!

It’s getting close to Christmas and Santa is getting ready for his flight around the world.  He has asked St Helen’s children to help him find out about different parts of the world so he can be prepared for his trip. I told him we’d be happy to help!

Over the next few weeks we are going to travel around the world and find out some facts for Santa.

Let’s start with the UK.

1) Watch https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zyhp34j/articles/z4v3jhv

2) Look for facts about the UK here with clips from Barnaby bear

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z9grd2p

3) Ask a grown up to tell you any facts they know about the UK.

Here are some ideas to get you started, think about; the countries in the UK, the capital cities, the features, the weather and the languages spoken.

Now I’d like you to write or draw five facts you have found out about the UK.

Send a photo of your work to the class email and I will pass it on to Santa.

You will earn 1 house point for each fact and a special sticker!

Let’s go fact find!
